Pfizer, the drug maker, announced that it was moving to a new drug-sharing agreement with GlaxoSmithKline in return for Pfizer agreeing to pay $1 billion in royalties to the pharmaceutical giant.
Pfizer's new partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, is expected to be announced later this week.
The agreement also allows Pfizer to pay GSK royalties for the drugs while they work on other aspects of their business.
The new arrangement, Pfizer's first-to-file deal with GlaxoSmithKline, would allow GlaxoSmithKline to pay Pfizer royalties for Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs that have been approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for more than 50 years.
Under the agreement, Pfizer will pay GSK royalties to all of Pfizer's brands, including Viagra, from its existing product lines, which would have an additional $5 billion in drug royalties for each additional year and for other Pfizer brands. The agreement also covers royalties for other Pfizer brand-name products, including Cialis and Staxyn.
Pfizer has previously agreed to pay GSK the same amount for all of its products, and will pay a further $2 billion upfront and a royalty to Pfizer in the future, a change to the agreement, the company announced on the company's website.
In addition, GSK will pay a percentage of Pfizer's payments to be equally divided between the two companies.
Pfizer will pay GSK the additional $4 billion in royalties as part of the agreement, which will add a third-party payment in the amount of $2 billion.
The company's shares are down 1.8% at Rs. 12.75 per cent to $24.30 on the New York Stock Exchange.
